Lurker No More

Uncategorized Oct 6, 2010

Gary Vaynerchuk calls folks who consume internet content but don’t leave comments or engage in the conversation ‘lurkers’.  Pretty good word for it – I’m embarrassed to say I’ve been a lurker for too long. That ended tonight.

I’ve left a few comments on websites before, but never tried to engage anyone on Facebook or Twitter. Tonight I made the commitment to engage someone. I was looking around Twitter and came across an interesting tweet. I followed the link to this person’s site (a Tumblr blog) where she had a few interesting posts, all of which asked for responses. When I tried to leave a comment, I couldn’t. There was no way to leave a comment – at least no way I could find. I’m a fairly educated internet user, so even if I missed it, she shouldn’t have it be so hard to figure out.

So I sent her a tweet. I simply said I thought she had good content and I’d like to leave a comment, but couldn’t figure out how.  I haven’t had a response yet. Hopefully she won’t be offended.

I know it’s only 1 tweet for me, but I’m very pumped up about it. The move from lurker to community member is exciting and scary, but I’m ready to get off the sidelines and into the game!
