Taking Advantage of People in the New Year

By now you’ve noticed the dramatic increase in ads for gym memberships, fitness programs, ab machines, etc. As is always the case the fitness industry is looking to cash in on your New Year’s resolutions, and banking on the fact that you will fail and be back next year for whatever new gimmick they come up with.

When I worked as a personal trainer, I hated the new year because I always felt like we were taking advantage of people. Selling memberships and personal training packages was like shooting fish in a barrel. It seemed so incredibly wrong to focus so much on the new year and not so much on providing value all year.

If we did a better job motivating people and getting the results they wanted they would stick with us, right?

I know there are lots of companies that make a large portion of their yearly revenue around the holidays and at the start of the year, and that’s great, but I wonder what would happen if those companies put as much effort into providing value and results all year?  People don’t stop wanting to be fat in July.

Maybe chasing the dollar is more important than providing value and getting results for people. Make no mistake, the fitness business is tough. Helping get in shape is an uphill battle that is highly likely to fail.

Someday it would be fun to open a gym that has fewer members, but provides extreme value and guaranteed results. Once a reputation is built, we could charge a premium for our services and really help make a difference in people’s lives.
