Seeking a European headquarters, the founder of a micro brewery is ultimately relying on his instincts. That’s what most successful entrepreneurs do.
The conventional advice when starting a business is to make a plan, set goals and analyze data. That’s all great advice, and we’ve done some of that when starting Natural Pro Fitness Coaching.
At first I spent all my time looking at data and concocting a plan. The data says that we’re nuts. The fitness game is beyond crowded and trying to make a name for ourselves looks to be impossible, on paper.
When it comes to planning it seemed like every time I felt good about a plan things would change. I felt like all I was doing was revising plans.
Then I realized that while planning and analysis are good and important, we needed to jump in and execute something. Even if it was the wrong thing.
Our first poke at online fitness coaching didn’t go too well. We tried for a year or so and then decided that we needed to change our approach a little.
Now Natural Pro Fitness Coaching is growing slowly. We have several clients, all of whom love us and the service we provide them, and that has given me more confidence about our business than a business plan or data.
We have a plan, although it’s open to change and under constant review, but now the focus is 100% on execution knowing that we will mess up, make mistakes, and hopefully dig ourselves out and keep going.
Recently I realized how far behind we’d still be if we hadn’t stopped thinking and started executing. There’s no substitute for experience. Maybe I’ll look back at this post someday and laugh, either because we failed miserably, or because it marks the humble beginning of a vast empire, but either way it’s a constant learning experience.
